Snow and wind

The Japanese team entering the food tent.

The whole day has been windy with snowfall and drifting snow. Many of the outdoor activities as the drone and gps program and the shallow drilling was cancelled and we started cleaning up and documenting the carpenters garage instead. Only the brave surface scientists continued.. there was a lot of new snow to monitor. Looking out the window of the Dome we observed a team of scientists entering the food tent. It looked like the Danish ‘Olsen banden’ – but was the Japanese team finding food for the coming up Japanese dinner Saturday evening. We are excited.

What we did today:

  1. Deep drilling core length at 19.00: 9.39 m.
  2. Drillers depth at 19.00: 810.49 m.
  3. Water vapour, methane, aerosols, snow and boundary layer measurements.
  4. Physical properties measurements.
  5. Water isotope sampling for sublimation studies.
  6. Installing exhaust pipe on the backup generator in the carpenters garage.
  7. Cleaning, tidying and documenting in the carpenters garage.
  8. Packing, strapping and weighing ice core boxes.

Weather: Overcast with snow showers, wind 5-10 m/s from NW turning to N,W and NW. Temperatures from -20°C to -11°C.
