Another good weather day and we got visitors

A view towards EGRIP camp from Polar 5.

On another fine day, we received visitors. The US/Swiss PARCA (Greenland Climate network) program is having the annual maintenance of its automatic weather stations all over the Greenland ice sheet. One is at EGRIP and several are in this region. Six people arrived with a Twin Otter. The next two days, they will use EGRIP as a hub for their operations. The fine weather was also used to remove the last overwintering fuel tank from the apron. Then a new load pad for the Hercules planes was made with snow blower and dozer blade. Angelika and Ole went off to a site some 17 km from camp to perform P-RES radar measurements. There was no flight with Polar 5 today, so the rest of the AWI team made CT scans of their cores and worked on a snow measurement system. In the drill trench, drillers filtered the hole fluid, and they are now ready to begin drilling.

What we did today

  1. At 15.07 The PARCA team landed with a Twin Otter. They will stay here for a couple of nights.
  2. Fuel transferred between tanks. All tanks now activated.
  3. Making LC-130 load pad with snow blower and dozer.
  4. Calibrating equipment for atmospheric moisture sampling and measurement.
  5. The isotope CFA laboratory measured: bags 2034 – 2059 (1118.5m to 1132.45m)
  6. Borehole filtered all the way to the bottom yielding only a few kilogram chips. Drill will be launched tomorrow.
  7. Trimming of the ceilings in the snow caves.
  8. Water vapour snow cave is now open.
  9. P-RES radar survey 15 km NE of EGRIP completed.
  10. Test wind turbine base is up. Turbine will be mounted tomorrow.
  11. Most top cores drilled so far have been CT-scanned. Working on LISA box.

EGRIP population is 32.

Weather today: Fine with blue sky all day. Temp. - 11 °C to -21 °C. Wind: 5 kt to 8 kt from SW. Visibility: Unrestricted.
