Weekend at EGRIP and taming of a screw

Steff and Trevor push the core barrel into the logging cabin, where Iben and Lydia are ready to receive the fresh core.

The AWI Polar 5 team made another successful shallow coring mission to B27. Right at the beginning, they had some generator issues which were solved. They came back to camp just in time to participate in Saturday evening dinner prepared by Nicolai and Sepp. Everybody enjoyed a nice Saturday evening in the main dome. During the weekend, the drillers have been teased by metal parts at the bottom of the hole. Saturday, a washer was collected and Sunday, they were able to bring the drill up with a screw attached to a magnet mounted behind the cutters. The hole should be clean now. As the weather continues to be nice, the AWI P-RES radar team were able to perform several measurements at points that could be reached with snow mobile.

What we did Saturday and Sunday:

  1. Saturday, Polar 5 flew the AWI drill team to B27 (76 38’ 54.8’’N; 46 28’ 35.1’’W) where 31.93 m long shallow ice core was drilled. The team returned in the evening.
  2. Drilled three runs Saturday producing one core, three runs Sunday producing three cores.
  3. Logging ice cores. Logging depth, Saturday: 1773.3 m. Sunday: 1783.6 m.
  4. Station for atmospheric moisture sampling and isotopic measurement is active. All instruments are mounted.
  5. The isotope CFA laboratory measured from bag 2602 to bag 2617 (1430.55m to 1439.3m).
  6. Groomed skiway and apron.
  7. P-RES radar survey upstream from EGRIP and in the vicinity of EGRIP.
  8. Working on drone and drone launching system.
  9. Removed snow blocks from caves.

EGRIP population is 26.
