The new warehouse layout in Kangerlussuaq

Moving the containers in place for the new strictly aligned and tidy container setup next to Warehouse 442 in Kangerlussuaq. The new layout looks so much better than before and it will be appreciated by FOMs, field participants and locals alike. Pictures by Sune Rasmussen and Iben Koldtoft.

Today’s first core was 3.3 m long, but the following drilling attempts resulted in shorter cores because the cutters had difficulties engaging. Whether this is due to the warmer ice, larger crystals, ice on the drill or something else, is uncertain, but we are still going downwards, if a little slower than recently.
Last year, the Niels Bohr Institute became the owners of the warehouse 442 in Kangerlussuaq. The warehouse is where we store all our field equipment, ice cores and vehicles on the way to and from EastGRIP camp. In front of the warehouse, we have eight containers for even more field equipment. Since we took over the warehouse, we wanted to get the containers organized in a better way. Therefore, the area on one side of the warehouse was prepared as container storage area, so all the containers can be placed next to each other instead of being scattered all around. At end of May, the field participants that came out of EGRIP, helped to secure all the items in the containers, before they were moved with a big container-crane-truck to one line next to the warehouse. Now all the containers with field gear are placed next to each other, making access much easier. Over the weekend, the area in front of the warehouse got new stable gravel on, so that hopefully the area will be less muddy during spring time when the snow is melting.

What we did today:

  1. Drilled four ice cores.
  2. Logging depth: 2605.43 m. Processing depth: 2604.25 m.
  3. Physical properties measurement 2599.30 m.
  4. Debugging surface – drill communication.
  5. Working on retro pallets for next flight period.

Weather today: Again, a day with blue sky and low winds. We are getting used to it. Temperatures -26°C to -14°C. Wind 3-8 kt from E turning SE.
