A Saturday evening with a birthday celebration

Levelling the floor in the science trench: Barbara, Lydia and Christian.

Many things were accomplished today, and at the same time we were able to spend a Saturday evening together. With 19 people in camp it became a festive affair. It was Chris’ birthday and according to tradition, the Danish group gave Chris a birthday song. Niccolo and Malte prepared an Italian dinner: Gnochi with Italian omelette.

What we have done today:

  1. Setting up Swiss drill test site.
  2. Testing and practice with Covacs drill finished.
  3. Leveling floor in science trench and hauling snow to surface.
  4. Danish shallow drill ready.
  5. Drilling a 3.8 m core through roof of drill trench.
  6. Saturday evening: todays cooks Nicolo and Malte.

Ad. 5: The drillers needed a hole in the roof for drilling fluid hoses. At the same time, the core from the drilling (a sample of the balloon trench roof) was packed for analysis in Germany.

Weather today: Cloudy with snow in the morning, later sunny. Temp. -9°C to -17°C, Wind 10-17 kt from S turning WNW. Visibility: In the morning 1 km due to snow, later to horizon.
