Getting into the routines

Monday was spent getting all the new people in camp accustomed to the different tasks we are carrying out here at EGRIP. Drillers went into shifts, teaming up new camp members with more experienced drillers, and ice core logging followed the same mode with Helle instructing new loggers. Drill electronics was prepared for an evening test. On the surface a new team emerged (see picture), carrying out the many different measurements in the surface program. Chris finished the grooming of the skiway taking advantage of the good surface contrast during the sunny part of the day.
In the science trench it was more business as usual, as scientists from previous flights made steady progress doing physical properties and water isotope measurements. Finally Nora and Basile have been working tirelessly on cleaning some of the core troughs that will be used for the brittle ice – to make them nice and smooth for the fragile ice core.

What we did today:

1. Finished grooming of skiway and removal of cargo from surface.
2. Deep drilling core length at 19.00: Saturday: 5.17 m.
3. Logging depth at 19.00: 495.23 m.
4. Water isotopes: Depth 78.65 m (started on lower part of pilot hole core)
5. Firn-gas tent packed.
6. Water vapour, methane, aerosols, snow and boundary layer measurements
7. Physical properties measurements.
8. Cleaning of core troughs.

Weather: Overcast in the morning, turning sunny and then again cloudier in the evening. Wind turning from SW to NW and increasing to 9 m/s. Temperature between -13°C and -11°C.
