Ice Music Concert

The Ice Music concert in the Concert trench. A great experience.

Today was Ice Music concert day in camp. At 5 pm everybody enjoyed Glögg and Æbleskiver in the calm and sunny afternoon before entering the under-snow concert hall. Here a beautifully illuminated and decorated stage was packed with all kinds of ice instrument made of both local and imported pieces of ice and snow. Instruments included firn-core and ice-block xylophones, crushed ice sounder, various ice percussion instruments, and even ice horns. The combination of very beautiful singing, ice music, and pretty low temperatures gave the AWI-box-seated audience a unique experience out of this world. After the concert, Kevin and Frederik treated us with freshly made pizzas and home made ice cream. Because it was Frederiks birthday we were singing the birthday-instrument song for him. Although we did our best, the performance was not quite up to the standard of the previous concert. A scheduled skier for the day was cancelled due to bad weather conditions in Kanger. We hope for improvement until tomorrow, where 30 people should leave camp and 18 people are scheduled to arrive together with fuel, food and science gear. The deep drilling performed well despite a morning issue with the cutters. The firn gas drilling site was closed down, and the RADIX camp is preparing to start drilling for the casing soon.

What we did today:

  1. Deep drilling 18.57 m. Drillers’ depth 1291.54 m. Loggers depth 1303.53 m
  2. Science trench processing below brittle zone, depth 1173.70 – 1184.70 m.
  3. DEP measurement of firn gas shallow core to final depth 140 m
  4. Measurements in isotope laboratory, final depth: 770.00 m
  5. Measurements in physical properties laboratory, final depth: 1158.30 m
  6. Water vapour sampling and measuring.
  7. Preparing for drilling at RADIX site.
  8. Packing down at firn gas drilling site.

Weather: Clear blue sky all day. Thin high clouds in the evening.

Temperature -10 ºC to -22 ºC. Wind 0-8 kt from SW along skiway.
