An exciting day

Today was the second full day of the JSEP groups visit to EGRIP, and what a day it was! The JSEP high schoolers took turns helping out in the science trench and getting tours of camp both above and below the surface, including our warm labs., surface labs, and the drill trench.
After an exciting day, we all got another fabulous dinner – chef Frederik and his cooks assistants are spoiling a camp of 62 with treat after treat. We are all so impressed! And then the evening entertainment: The creative JSEP group invited us all to write letters in the snow by simply lying flat enjoying the evening sun. Finally a friendly game of soccer between two mixed teams - good thing we had an orange soccer ball. In the EGRIP drill trench, the drillers are getting into a routine using the setup and electronics used for the NEEM drilling. Today some 19 m of cores was produced in 6 runs like yesterday, and the night time filtering team retrieved 53 kg of chips.
The crews in the processing line the isotope CFA lab. and the Physical Properties labs. all continued making good progress during the day, assisted by the JSEP high schoolers during the afternoon. All measurements and sampling are now done on ice below the brittle zone.

What we did today:

  1. Drilling of 19.1 m of ice core and retrieving 53 kg of slush through filtering.
  2. Logging of main core, depth at 19.00: 1471.65 m.
  3. Processing in the science trench down to 1411.13 m.
  4. Measurements in isotope laboratory to 1242.45 m.
  5. Measurements in physical properties laboratory of brittle ice down to 1394.80 m.
  6. Water vapour sampling and measuring.
  7. Japanese snow crystal and surface monitoring.
  8. Work on the bore hole logger at the RADIX site.
  9. Grooming apron and skiway.
  10. JSEP group participated in ice core processing and analyzed their own data.

Weather: Mostly sunny day with no or very little wind from various directions. Temperature -18 °C to -6 °C.
