KOPRI 10 m surface core

Eager team drilling the 10 m KOPRI ice core.

Today a sunny day with colder temperatures (-10 ºC) and some wind and this made the day perfect for surface ice core drilling. An eager team walked into the clean area and together we drilled a 10.45m deep 3 inch ice core. A happy day for Kha.

What we did today:

  1. Drilled 23.69 m in 7 runs (runs 771-777) , filter runs in the night (32 kg of wet chips).
  2. Main core logged to 1716.68 m.
  3. Cores processed to bag 3076.
  4. Documentation and inventory in the cfa water isotope lab.
  5. Measurements in physical properties to bag 3027.
  6. Surface program- calibration of sensors.
  7. Maintained and repaired the cabin PistenBully.
  8. Drilled a 10.45 m long hand auger core for KOPRI.
  9. Tested the Rocket Disc WIFI system.
  10. Started making 360 deg movies in the trenches.

Ad 9. The system worked well until at distance of 23 km towards the RADIX site. We believe the surface contours prevent the connection at the RADIX site. A few meters higher placement of the discs might allow communication between EGRIP and the RADIX site.

Weather: Overcast and snow all day, clearing in the evening. Temperatures between -16 ºC and -8 ºC. The wind dropped from 12 kt to 9 kt during the afternoon. The wind direction was mainly from 240 T.

Camp population: 32
