Mining in the snow caves begins

Nicolai is trimming the slot in the ceiling of the drill trench to make room for the drill tower.

As work on the surface has been progressing so well, several people went to work in the drill and science trenches. Due to deformation of the ceiling in the snow caves, the ceiling needs to be trimmed. Snow blocks are cut away and hauled to the surface along the entrance ramp. A snowmobile with a box sled is used for the hauling. As internet connectivity came to camp today, a lot of people used the opportunity to get in touch with family and friends. After dinner, we had the first film night of the field season.

What we did today:

  1. Built Weatherports no. 1. Now, all weaterports are up.
  2. Internet in camp established via satellite dish.
  3. Trimming of the ceilings in the snow caves.
  4. Reset all markers on skiway. Still need to reset markers in lead-ins.
  5. First grooming of apron and Basler parking spot.
  6. Work on setting up the isotope CFA laboratory.

Weather today: Mostly overcast and snow. In the evening clearing. Temp. -8°C to -12°C. Wind: 11 kt to 16 kt from W to NW. Visibility: Down to 2 km during snow, otherwise unrestricted.
