Today Polar 5 completed the put-in of the AWI team.

The excavated snow blocks begin to look like a dragon.

It is cold, clear and windy. This morning, wind chill reached - 42 °C, which calls for extra care to avoid frost bite. Today, Polar 5 flew to Kangerlussuaq with a load of ice cores and arrived back from Kangerlussuaq with cargo and two new members of the EGRIP team. We say hello to: Hans Christian and Sonja. Including the crew of Polar 5, we are now 26 in camp. Tomorrow, plans will be made on how Polar 5 will deploy a shallow ice coring team at different locations on the NE Greenland ice sheet and a team that will re-measure the bore hole at the former NEEM location. All the while, trimming of the drill trench is nearing its end.

What we did today:

  1. Groomed skiway.
  2. Handling one Polar 5 flight.
  3. Repairing a frozen drain.
  4. Repairing staircase, door and shelves in main dome
  5. Maintenance of the DK shallow drill.
  6. Mounting the motor section of the deep drill.
  7. Setting up test site for AWI ice core CT scans.
  8. Trimming of the ceilings in the snow caves.
  9. Work on setting up the isotope CFA laboratory.

Weather today: Sky clear. Temp. - 19 °C to -32 °C. Wind: 10 kt to 14 kt from SW. Visibility: Unrestricted.
