Left: 4th of July Burgers getting ready here at EGRIP. Right: Science talk bingo at EGRIP – audience is carefully keeping track of their bingo sheets!
Tine and our chef Kevin prepared delicious burgers for us on this 4th of July, so we all could get in the right mood for the US Independence Day – what a treat! After mealtime Tobias and Alexandra had organized a science session including bingo-sheets with a number of words to look out for during the talks. While Petra won the bingo prize, we all had a very interesting evening discussing abrupt climate change, past, present and future.
In the drill trench we had a little too much excitement when the maximum pulling power of our winch suddenly wasn’t enough to break the core and bring the ice core drill back to the surface. Luckily the fourth attempt with the drills emergency “super-banger” system manged to free drill and core to the great relief of the drillers and everybody else. Otherwise drilling progressed at a steady pace.
Yesterday we discussed the mystery of the bend GPS pole 30km from camp, and our question did not go unnoticed. Two good colleagues of ours (thank you Olaf Eisen and Susanne Buchardt!) both pointed out that extreme winds might be to blame for the bend stake. We are still a bit puzzled that only one stake is bend, but maybe some local meteorology is to blame and not an unlucky skidoo driver.
Otherwise work continued steadily in science trench, and also, on the surface all programs are running nicely, with both surface and atmospheric measurements running to schedule.
What we did during the day:
EGRIP population is 33.
Weather: Wind between 4kts and 10kts from westerly directions. Mostly cloudy before noon, turning more sunny in the aftenoon. Temperatures from -10°C to -5°C.
