Trevor and Romain presenting the recovered CryoEgg
A day with many stories. A rainbow in the morning and recovery of the CryoEgg in the evening. The rainbow was unusual and indicated a very warm day on the centre of the Greenland ice sheet where we only see halo’s (icebows) because temperature are below 0 deg C. The recovery of the CryoEgg took most of the attention. Romain had created a grabber with 6 core catchers and top holes to allow the liquid to flow past the grabber as the clearance between the grabber and the borehole is less than 1 mm. The grabber was lowered down to the bottom of the borehole and pushed over the CryoEgg until we beleived it was completely in the grabber. It was pulled up 2100 m with a speed of 4-6 cm/s to allow the liquid to move gently around the egg. It took 10 hours to get the grabber to the surface and some quite nervous drillers waiting to see if CryoEgg actually was grabbed. It was – and Trevor and Romain – were very relived and happy. Congratulations to both for excellent work. The camp came down and it was celebrated with a speech from Trevor.
