EGRIP shallow ice cores 2019

Iben and Trevor at the S4 50 km upstream site

There is a great demand for shallow ice cores in the region around EGRIP. This year we are planning to drill three shallow ice cores: S7, 3 inch core to 84 m for Tobias Ekhard behind white garage at EGRIP S4, 3 inch core to 78 m for EGRIP 50 km upstream(75.2706N, 37.007W) and S5, 3 inch core for EGRIP to be drilled at the SE shear margin 13 km from EGIP (75.5549N, 35.6230W) The S4 core was started last week and since Iben, Trevor and Romain was there we had a good storm. The pit has to be opened again…

What we did during the day:

  1. CFA measurements of 33 bags, last bag 3749.
  2. PP measurements of bags 3704 and 3795 where the superbanger was used to break the cores.
  3. Station for atmospheric moisture sampling and isotopic measurement is active.
  4. Lowered ice core buffer with 2 shelves to avoid contact with roof next year
  5. Working on the radar data
  6. Measurements with the VHF radar
  7. Drilling at the S4 site (50 km upstream core). Final depth 78.31 m
  8. Taking spare bunk beds down in weatherports
  9. Cleaning an preparing cargo line – drum pallets set up
  10. Cleaning and organizing on top floor of carpenters garage

EGRIP population is 23

Weather: Wind from 10kts decreasing to 7 kts during the day. Wind from W. A day with overcast and sunny spells. Temperatures between -18 °C and -5 °C.
