A week at EGRIP!

Today at 15.45 it was exactly one week ago the first team landed here at EGRIP. What a difference a week makes! Now we have reached the point where all surface structures have been erected and all our trenches made accessible and operational. Furthermore, the drillers are now at the point where they have been doing a termination test and started to assemble the logger. The inclined slot for the drill to be tilted into has also been trimmed, so we are getting closer to the point where instrumentation can be deployed in the bore hole. In the science trench Nico has also done some trimming, there the ceiling height needed to be increased a bit.
On the surface Sverrir has been grooming camp, so we now have a much more level surface to work on around the dome. Sverrir and Sepp also go the elevator to the trenches up and running and secured the pop-up tents with screws, so we don’t lose them on a windy day. Anna-Maria, Iben, Grant, Nicholas and Bo managed to get the final Weatherport up, and Sepp used the snow blower to create a nice layer of insulation around the base of the last Weatherports. The doctors clinic was also furnished, and the distributed camp siren system deployed and tested. And while all this is going on Bruno is steadily improving on the reliability and safety of our electrical systems and appliances in camp as well as assisting the drillers.

What we did today:

  1. Groomed camp.
  2. Made elevator operational and secured pop-up tents.
  3. Made successful termination pull-test.
  4. Trimmed inclined slot.
  5. Finished final Weatherport and furnished doctors’ clinic.
  6. Deployed and tested distributed siren system.
  7. Improved safety of thermostat box in Weatherport with freshees.

Weather today: Clear blue skies before lunch, with some thin high clouds moving in during the evening. Temp. -35°C to -22°C. Wind: 11-17 kt from WSW. Visibility: Unrestricted.
