A beautiful day at EGRIP

Left: Bruno is continuously improving on camp installations, but is here seen returning from a logger-repair job in the drill trench. Middle: Nicholas and Iben observing the logger mounted on the tower. Right: The science trench before clean-up of ceiling shavings.

Today we had some change in the weather, with more moisture in the atmosphere here at EGRIP. During the morning this resulted in some clous cover, but the sun returned during the day, and in combination with moisture condensing in the form of diamond dust as temperatures dropped during the evening, we ended the day with a spectacular midnight sun. Sometimes being on an ice sheet feels like being in a beautiful fairy-tale!
Below the surface work proceeded on assembling and troubleshooting the logger, we all hope that it will behave tomorrow, so we can send it downhole to investigate any ice flow related deformation of the bore hole, since last field season. In the science trench work also progressed with the cleaning up of all the ice that had been removed from the ceiling yesterday.
Thanks to Sverrirs efforts camp is now progressively being levelled, removing a years’ worth of snowdrifts is a big job indeed! And inside the dome we now have both soda machine and draft beer, also due to Sverrirs efforts to make us all comfortable here at EGRIP. On top of the dome Iben and Nico managed to mount our motion detection radar. Hence, we can now keep track of whatever moves in and around camp. Indeed, Iben managed to be both at the deepest and highest point of camp today, starting with further trimming of the inclined slot in the drill trench before going on top of the dome!

What we did today:

  1. Continued grooming and leveling of camp.
  2. Assembling and troubleshooting of bore hole logger.
  3. Cleaning up and organizing in science trench.
  4. Readying core-logger laptop for logging cabin.
  5. Moved doctors clinic to designated Weatherport.
  6. Continued inspections and improvements of camp electrical system and appliances.
  7. Installed motion detection radar system.

Weather today: Some clouds before lunch, gradually clearing and diamond dust during the evening. Temp. -30°C to -19°C. Wind: 6-15 kt from W gradually decreasing during the day. Visibility: Unrestricted, except during the evening, where it decreased to some 500m.
