A beautiful weekend

Weekend in the EGRIP kitchen. Left: Pizza’s are getting prepared by Jeppe with such an efficiency that the camera can’t focus. Right: The dinner is being prepared by Grant, Iben, Emma and Romain, while Jeppe enjoys his evening out of the kitchen and watching what the 4 cooks are up to.

This weekend we could all enjoy sunny skies and low winds, even complete calm Sunday. It is hard to believe, but even a temperature of -25°C can feel warm when you are in the sun and have the intense reflection from the white snow surface as well. Hence, many people in camp went for walks, skiing and even a bit of volleyball during the weekend here!
Bringing a further touch of more southern conditions to camp, Jeppe treated us to a delicious selection of pizzas Saturday for lunch and the Saturday cooking team: Emma, Grant, Iben and Romain spoiled camp with a 3-course menu. Starter: Tortilla chips with guacamole and salsa accompanied by margaritas. Main course: Stuffed red peppers and stuffed tortilla pancakes. Dessert: Bastogne cake with mascarpone cream, meringue-crust and crushed yorkie-bar topping. Sunday, Jeppe again made a fantastic brunch for camp to give camp a good start to the day.
Of course, a good part of Saturday and Sunday are also workdays here at EGRIP, so we also had a lot on our todo lists: The drillers did a filter-run Sunday to make sure the upper part of the borehole does not contain many floating drill cuttings, and also drilled a full size ice core Saturday. The logging and processing continued, and on the surface grooming of skiway and apron continued as well as troubleshooting of the new Pistenbully. Main generator service was also taken care of and we also managed to finish up the gathering, documentation and palletizing of retro-cargo for next week’s flight. Everything on the surface is just easier in beautiful weather!

What we did during the weekend:

  1. Drilled one ice core, drillers length: 3.28m.
  2. Filtered the borehole.
  3. Logged Friday’s last core, logged length 3.50m, loggers’ depth 2438.54m.
  4. Processed 9.9m of core, bags 4409 to 4423.
  5. Installed and tested radios in the Cupola.
  6. Finished palletizing cargo for next week’s flight.
  7. Groomed skiway and apron.
  8. Serviced main generator.

Weather today: Sunny with only a few clouds. Temperatures between -37°C to -24°C. Wind: Saturday between 5kt and 12 kt between W and WSW, Sunday calm. Visibility: Unrestricted.
