Skiway in the Sun

The EGRIP skiway after grooming under a mostly blue sky, a beautiful sight!

This Monday the sunny and calm conditions persisted until lunch, then the wind started to return. Sverrir went out on the skiway for a final grooming session to make the skiway as nice as possible in anticipation of tomorrows scheduled flight. Worn out skiway flags was furthermore replaced by a small group of people enjoying the evening sun here at EGRIP, as well as the quiet at the end of the lead in flags were camp is not visible!
In the drill trench the pace is ramping up, and the drillers produced 3 ice cores for a total of some 10m drilled, a new season’s best. In the science trench and logging cabin, the logging and processing is keeping nicely up with this pace, thanks to Nico’s efficiency and some helping hands every now and then.
On the surface Sepp has set up a pop-up tent near camp and started measuring temperatures down through the snow and firn in a shallow hole drilled last year. Inside the dome we have set up more chairs and tables in anticipation of camp being busier soon, and the work on cables and electrical appliances continues unabated.

What we did today:

  1. Drilled three ice cores, drillers length: 3.51m, 3.49m and 3.01m.
  2. Logged three ice cores, logged length 10.25m, loggers’ depth 2448.79m.
  3. Processed 8.25m of core, bags 4424 to 4438.
  4. Replaced broken skiway flags.
  5. Groomed skiway.
  6. Identified part numbers for needed Pistenbully repair.
  7. Started measuring temperature profile in shallow hole near camp.

Weather today: Sunny. Temperatures between -38°C and -27°C. Wind: Calm in the morning, increasing to 9kt from W in the evening. Visibility: Unrestricted.
