Balkan goodbye party

The entire camp next to the Bosnian flag on the flag line, ‘Saturday night’ on a Friday.

Two short ice cores were drilled today. The problem of engaging the cutters is becoming more and more pronounced, probably because of the borehole temperature close to the melting point enables the formation of ice on the drill. Weather has been excellent for flying today. At 7 am the GEUS Twin-Otter started its engines in front of main dome and at 7:06 it was in the air on its way to Iceland with an AWS maintenance stopover and a fuel stop at Constable Point. We heard from our colleagues down at Summit station that they had two flights cancelled today due to too strong cross wind on their skiway. We just hope to good conditions prevails as we are expecting a Skier tomorrow. Because of the flight scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, we moved the traditional ‘Saturday night dinner’ to today Friday (similar to last week). This ‘Saturday’ had a strong Balkan theme. The Hungarian team and in particular László prepared a delicious Pörkölt for main dish (the dish that many of us know as Goulash). For dessert, Aira baked sweet Baklava cakes from a family recipe. Food was served with homemade Palinka made from apple and pear. Before dinner, Meg’s homemade Bosnian flag was raised and celebrated on the flag line, where we all enjoyed the mild conditions of the evening. Only 7 out of 25 camp members will stay in camp after the planned crew exchange, so for many this is a goodbye party.

What we did today:

  1. Drilled two ice cores.
  2. Logging depth: 2645.65 m. Processing depth: 2643.88 m.
  3. Finished sampling at the Hungarian firn core site.
  4. Cleared trench entrances free of snow (again).
  5. Build EGRIP pallet for Saturday shipment.
  6. Celebrated ‘Saturday night’ with Balkan menu and Bosnian flag.

Weather today: Blue sky all day, SW wind below 8 kt along the skiway and mild temperatures of -12 to -7°C.
