Where is the bedrock??

The happy EGRIPers Saturday Evening.

We are going into the final days… It is absolutely amazing that we can continue to drill up to 1.7 m ice cores near the bed of a fast-flowing ice stream. We see no signs of shear movement so the full ice stream seems to flow like a block maybe floating on a layer of water. It is so exciting and each run is recorded, the liquid level followed closely and the borehole camera kept close and charged. This is history. As we find visible particles in the ice, the ice is pulled out of the drill in red and orange light and after logging, packed in black bags. We are not measuring DEP anymore.
We had a wonderful Saturday evening celebrating Canadian Day with Asian food prepared mostly by Nan and Jinhwa. It was so delicious. After dinner we blackened the windows, turned on the disc lights and danced through the night. A week has ended and a new one begun. Sunday the weather was great and the happy and tired team continued to drill, clean camp and enjoy the sun. Plans for a BBQ on 4 July are being formed.
As a special event we tested a StarLink out at the Tomato site.

What we did during the weekend:

  1. Drilled four ice cores (last run 1141, drillers depth 2650.35 m).
  2. Logging depth: 2663.51 m. No DEP.
  3. Disassembled spare bunkbeds.
  4. Removed snow from the entrance to the trenches and the freezer with the snowblower.
  5. Levelled drifts in camp with PistenBullies.
  6. Asian Saturday evening dinner. Thanks Nan and Jinhwa.

Weather Saturday and Sunday: Saturday very overcast and winds up to 17 kn, gusting 25 kn from NE turning E. The wind calmed during the night and Sunday had blue sky and very low winds with ground fog in the evening. Temperatures between -14°C and -1°C.
