Sverrir (and Sepp) mounting the new garage front.
The camera logging on July 4th did not turn out well for several reasons. First, taking 9 hours to get the bailer to the bed, the power was out on the camera. Second, the very unclear drill liquid totally absorbed the light hanging 15 cm under the camera so only dark images were seen as soon as the liquid was entered. The led-light source was moved to the ring around the pressure tube chamber for the camera. A second attempt was made, now faster as the bailer was open and thus could move faster though the drill liquid. The images turned out to be clear on the surface, the surface of the liquid in the borehole is clear and the video documents the splash well as the camera sinks into the liquid. Here the ice cuttings from the surface can be seen passing in the unclear drill liquid. Until the camera reaches bed the liquid is seen to be unclear. Approaching bed dark colors can be seen and the glass becomes covered with a layer of murky ‘slime’. This layer stays in the glass until the camera was pulled up and here it can be seen to disintegrate. A mystery day – as we still not know what is going on. Some of the murky ‘slim’ was found on the cable and is being looked at under the microscope in the science trench. An attempt was made to drill at the end of the day, but again after few rotations, the drill could not rotate. The cutters were again damaged. We stand with no penetration, no liquid level change and no shear observed? Follow the drama again tomorrow.
In the camp activates continues with the mounting of a new front for the mechanic garage, preparations for the logger calibration stand and finalizing the repaired front entrances of the Dome. And super food ...
