More digging

Iben and Daniel probing in the snow pit.

The day started out windy + foggy and with a standby for leaving Summit Station. We used the standby time to prepare the snowmobiles and the sledges, and only little later than normal, we were allowed to leave camp. The contrast was again white in white, and this time with snow blowing in the air when we arrived at GRIP site. Summit Station asked us to come back if the weather did not improve, as a storm was on the way to Summit. We called in again after half an hour, where the conditions already have improved, so we decided to stay. We continued digging, probing, and shoveling in our snow pit, extending it to more than double its size. Unfortunately, without any success of finding the borehole casing.

By the end of the day, we collected more radar data at the bottom of the snow pit. It shows some feature around 3.4m under the pit’s snow surface, so in a total depth of 5.1m. Tomorrow, we will extend the depth of the pit in that area.

What we did today:

  1. Station morning meeting at 7.30am.
  2. Continued digging, probing, and shoveling over the drill dome.
  3. Radar survey in the snow pit.
  4. Online call with JP and Dorthe.

Weather today: Windy and foggy/cloudy in the morning turning to a sunny day in the afternoon still with wind. Wind 9-21 kt turning from SSW to SW. Temperatures between -38°C and -20°C.
