Today we arrived at EGRIP early in the afternoon on Skier 61, landing at 13.00 local time in sunny conditions with the wind nicely along the skiway and a temperature approaching -20°C. After a smooth turnaround, the skier departed camp exactly an hour later.
This year’s highly experienced put in crew are: Astrid, Dorthe, Alexander, Aslak, Claus, Julien, J.P., Mads, Martin, Sepp, Steff, Sverrir and Bo. Making the most of the good weather conditions that prevailed during the rest of the day, we immediately started clearing snow. First the excavation was done by hand using shovels and then as equipment was freed, we continued with the help of a snowblower and a Pistenbully. Furthermore, we established communication, including internet connectivity with the outside world and had the camp Wi-Fi up and running. By dinner time all the garages had been opened and the dome was powered some 80 min after landing. With power established, the dome could be heated yielding plus-degrees on all floors right before dinner time. We also have snowmobiles in operation, facilitating the movement of non-freeze cargo to the dome. The “tomatoes” quartering unit was moved into camp before Astrid served a nice dinner for us preprepared by Claus and Mads in Kangerlussuaq. And then Dorthe even made chocolate cake for dessert, a welcome treat for everybody after a busy afternoon and evening.
What we did this afternoon:
Weather today: Clear blue skies and temp. from -24°C to -19°C. Wind: 12-17 kt from SW. Visibility: Unrestricted.
