A busy Sunday

Sepp and Alexander working on the excavated Pistenbully.

Normally Sundays here at EGRIP proceeds at a leisurely pace, but not so yet, as there is still so much to do in order to get camp fully operational. Hence, we have all had a busy Sunday here at EGRIP making good use of today’s good weather. Julien has been excavating first a Pistenbully together with Sepp and then a hole for a second outhouse, with assistance from Astrid and Aslak, when they were no busy cooking and fixing up camp IT. The dug out Pistenbully needed quite a bit of attention by Sverrir and Alexander, but is now running. Hence all three Pistenbullies are now operational, as well as the Caterpillar!
Dorthe has adjusted the weather station slightly with the assistance of the Sun and a clock to determine true north. Afterwards Dorthe readied the logger calibration stand. Martin and Sepp have both been snow blowing trench entrances, so we now have access to both the cook’s freezer and the drill trench. Steff’s first assessment of the drill trench is that all equipment is in good shape, but some shaving/trimming of the trench is needed. Sverrir has levelled drifts around the dome in preparation for the main generator and pulled it to camp. Mads, Claus and J.P. have lifted/replaced all the ski way flags and started grooming the skiway. Bo has been inspecting/updating camp markings, safety and tracking equipment, with assistance from Astrid, Claus and Mads. For dinner we got a nice spaghetti Bolognese and even ice cream for dessert!

What we did today:

  1. Excavated and started the Pistembully that had overwintered on the surface.
  2. Got the newest Pistenbully operational.
  3. Groomed the Skiway.
  4. Raised all skiway markings and changed broken flags.
  5. Pulled main generator next to the dome.
  6. Started up Caterpillar.
  7. Excavated entrances to drill trench and cooks freezer.
  8. Inspected safety equipment and updated markings of ramps in camp.
  9. Made second outhouse.

Weather today: Clear blue skies and temp. from -27°C to -17°C. Wind: 11-18 kt from SW. Visibility: Unrestricted.
