Sverrir is doing maintenance of the Pistenbully with crane parked on a snow hill
Drilling continued in the white tent today, but with the interruption of a bore hole reaming test and experimenting with step cutters. The conical reamer is used to extend the bore hole diameter, which is necessary for example if drill liquid has to be added to the borehole. During midday, it is becoming problematic to drill as the temperature in the white tent approaches the melting point. Neither the drill nor the ice core is performing well under such conditions. Meanwhile, Sverrir has ‘opened’ the Pistenbully with the crane and placed it on a snow hill for maintenance. Sepp finally started temperature logging of the S3 shallow bore hole after having recovered it in a 4.5 m deep pit dug out with the bare fists and a chainsaw. Knut and Lee went 35 km south of camp to continue the mapping of deep folds in the ice beyond the NEGIS shear margin. In preparation for another radar survey, Andrew set up a 5 km flag line south of camp with flags spaced by 100 m. An attempt was made to assemble the radar PolyPod, but we did not yet localise the screws and bolts. Running and skiing on the skiway in the late afternoon.
What we did today:
Weather today: Mostly sunny but overcast morning and evening. Temperatures from -12 °C to -7 °C. Wind 0-15 kt from W and NW.
