Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th July 2024

A sunny weekend and tracks on the snow

The big snow melter has never been as clean and tidy as now

As we celebrated 4th of July a few days ago, the weekend had ordinary working hours. Saturday morning Knut, Lee, Andrew and Nicholas headed out for a full day radar survey. As they reached their final destination some 22 NW of EGRIP they encountered some tracks – from two polar bears, most likely a mother and cub that were heading SW. The polar bears apparently avoided EGRIP – possibly because they passed by upwind – which was probably the best both for them and for us. We have notified our colleagues at Summit station that there are polar bears on the ice. Otherwise, camp has been busy under the Sun with 2x grooming of both apron and skiway, dissembling of two more Weatherports, swapping of fuel tanks, closing of main water system and removal of main snow melter, as well as two full-day radar surveys out of camp.

What we did today:

  1. Finished and stored two pallets for overwintering
  2. Took down two Weatherports
  3. Closed major water system
  4. Groomed apron and skiway two times
  5. Worked on documentation
  6. Made final radar surveys

Weather this weekend: Mostly sunny conditions, temperatures from -15 °C to -4 °C. Wind 4-10 kt from W.
