Last Weatherport down

The last Weatherport has been disassembled and packed into boxes by a very efficient team of highly skilled personel, then it was driven away by JP in the Cat

After we have been blessed for almost a week with sunny conditions and low wind, the forecast for next week, where the pull-out is scheduled for Thursday, looks less promising. Therefore, we now finalize the closing down of camp in case the flight will have to be shifted to another day. Today, the last Weatherport was taken down and all five Weatherports were stored on the sledge where they will overwinter. The pallet with Knut’s radar equipment is being prepared. A final pallet that will contain ice cores and our personal luggage can only be build at the day of the flight. Sverrir gave the skiway and the apron a final touch with the groomer and they will now be left to harden in the cold nights. We just cross our fingers that there will be no snowfall in the coming days as it lowers the quality of the skiway surface. Mori turned 60 years today, so we had a Japanese inspired dinner and a birthday song (sound of the borehole lid closing, sound of the drill, and sound of a Japanese driller falling into the inclined trench).

What we did today:

  1. Took down the last Weatherport and stored them all on a sledge
  2. Prepared the pallet with Knut’s radar equipment
  3. Cleaned up in Dome
  4. Groomed apron and skiway with a final touch
  5. Worked on documentation
  6. Celebrated Mori’s 60 years birthday

Weather today: Entirely sunny conditions, temperatures from -18 °C to -6 °C. Wind 3-8 kt from W turning SW.

FL, Anders Svensson

All Weatherports are now loaded onto the sledge where they will spend the winter on a snow hill

The new snow hill in town is now used for storage of two retro pallets, Westa snow blower, tiller and large snow melter. In the background the perfectly groomed skiway
